Tom Marden, a pilot from Bucks County, won gold in the National Championship Air Race in Roswell, New Mexico, writes Melinda Rizzo for the Bucks County Beacon.
Marden flew No. 66 in the Biplane Division and won the six-lap race with a time of 219.9 mph. The Reno Air Racing Association hosted this year’s competition.
The Bucks County Commissioners recognized Marden’s recent achievement at their business meeting last week.
“In addition to [the win] Tom is the manager of Van Sant Airport in Erwinna, which is one of the airports the county owns,” said Bob Harvie, the president of Bucks County Commissioners.
Andrew McVicker, another pilot with connections to Van Sant Airport, also competed and came in fourth place.
“We’ve had everybody from generals to airline pilots that have had their start at Van Sant … Thank you for everything you do for the community. It has economic impact and personal impact. Van Sant is truly a gem,” said Marden.
