The Newtown Rotary Club is supporting the New Jersey-based nonprofit Pedals for Progress by hosting a used bicycle collection on Sunday, Oct. 18, writes Jeff Werner for the Patch.
Pedals for Progress accepts old bicycles, repairs them and ships them to developing countries to help local economies.
The club will be hosting the drive from 9 AM to 12 PM in the parking lot opposite Olde Saint Andrew Church at 135 South Sycamore Street in Newtown.
Used adult and children’s bicycles, as well as working sewing machines, can be donated. The drive will not accept disassembled and rusted bikes or bike parts.
Those donating a bike are asked to provide a donation of at least $20. The funds will go toward the cost of processing, rebuilding, shipping and distributing the bicycles.
The material and cash donations are deductible, and individuals will be provided with a receipt.
This year, the donated sewing machines and bikes are being sent to Belize, Albania, Guatemala, Togo, Tanzania and Sierra Leone.
