Blue Bell Nonprofit Takes Flight Providing Medical Air Transportation for Patients

By

Angel Flight East, a nonprofit based out of Wings Field in Blue Bell, is providing air transportation to medical patients who need to travel for medical appointments, writes Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.

In 2021, the nonprofit organized 1,000 flights. About 50 of them were done by volunteer pilot Louis Barson, owner of Hymie’s and Barson’s Restaurant Group in Merion Station.

“It’s kind of cheating because I love to fly so I get to help people while I do my passion,” he said. “So it’s a win-win.”

Barson was especially active at the start of the pandemic when the difficulty in the restaurant industry left him with a lot of free time. So he chose to find a way to give back to those who needed it the most.

The organization is a lifeline to many people who have been told “no” repeatedly in their attempts to reach their destination.

“When they reach out to Angel Flight, it’s like their first ‘yes,’ and it gives them hope that they can get to their treatment,” said Jess Ames, the outreach and event director for the nonprofit.
