In a recent interview with Alicia Vitarelli of 6abc, The Devil Wears Prada 2 stars, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep, discussed their Philly connections, writes Abigail Covington for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Hathaway’s ties to the area date back to her maternal grandfather, Joe McCauley, one of WIP’s most famous radio hosts, who was nicknamed Philly’s “Morning Mayor.”
Her mother, Kate McCauley, was born in Philadelphia and attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Flourtown before heading to La Salle University for musical theater, where she met her husband.
Streep has her own Pennsylvania roots, with her ancestors coming from Bucks County and the Philly region. Surprisingly, this is something she has in common with the former editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour.
Wintour served as the inspiration for the iconic fashion editor character, Miranda Priestly, and this month, Ancestry.com revealed an unexpected connection.
Streep, who plays Priestly in the film, and Wintour are sixth cousins.
The pair shared fifth great-grandparents, Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Kinsey, who were Bucks County residents in the late 1700s.
“Isn’t that crazy?” Streep said in the interview.
The author of The Devil Wears Prada, who worked as Wintour’s assistant before publishing her novel, also grew up just 20 miles from Bucks County, in Allentown.
