When Caleb Frankel, an emergency room veterinarian from Bucks County, saw a gap in software technology in specialty veterinary hospitals, he decided to come up with a solution, writes Holly Quinn for Technical.ly.
“This is a company born out of my own frustration,” said Frankel. “Which, as it turns out, is a great way to start a company.”
In 2016, Frankel founded Instinct Science, a software company designed to help make things a little easier for vets who experience high levels of mental health strain.
Pet healthcare has been behind when it comes to its digital tools, with many practices still relying on paper records at the time when Frankel began his career in 2008.
Instinct EMR, the company’s flagship software, offers full practice management and an electronic medical record system for specialty veterinary hospitals.
Now, Instinct has its practice systems business, along with an educational veterinary journal, and clinical decision support through Plumb’s, a veterinary drug reference tool.
The company, which has approximately 200 employees, including 20 veterinarians as well as clinical experts and pharmacists, recently announced the launch of its new software expansion.
Instinct EMR for Primary Care is its new practice information management system (PIMS) designed for general veterinary practices.
“We’re just trying to do really good work under the radar,” Frankel said. “But as we grow, it’s nice for veterinarians to hear about what we’re doing, and why.”
