The Newtown Historic Association is launching a new exhibit detailing the history of Newtown on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Half-Moon Inn (Court Inn), writes Jeff Werner for Patch.
Curated in celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the display highlights 300 years of Newtown’s rich history.
Visitors can explore the exhibit from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday during the grand opening. After this weekend, the exhibit will be open to walk through any time the inn is open.
Over the last three years, the Newtown Historic Association has been transforming two rooms of the inn’s second floor. The project has been led by co-curators Brian Rounsavill and Dave Callahan.
The display explores various periods from the town’s past, including Early Newtown, Business, Transportation and Manufacturing, with artifacts from each era.
There are over 250 items on display, such as the door from George Washington’s headquarters in 1760, a post office door from 1805 and a drum from the Newtown Cornet Band from 1880.
Visitors will also see Native American arrowheads, a model of the courthouse complex from the 1700s and a filter used during the 1970 Apollo 13 mission.
