Ann’s Choice Senior Living Offers Residents a New Way to Stay Active

Ann’s Choice, a senior living community in Warminster, is offering a drumming aerobics program for its residents.

Ann’s Choice Senior Living Community in Warminster is offering a new fun way for its residents to keep active, writes Petra Shaw for the Patch.

Drums Alive is the community’s new program blending rhythmic drumming and aerobic movement.

Residents follow a choreographed routine using exercise balls balanced on buckets as drums. Each session spans 30 minutes and includes a main workout along with a warm-up and a cooldown.

The program has become very popular, growing from five participants to 20. Residents can choose from their seated class, standing class or hybrid class, and all equipment is provided.

“The program is designed to be inclusive and adaptable, making it accessible for all people, including seniors with varying physical and cognitive abilities,” said Fitness Coordinator Kathleen Mish.

Mish noted that the program offers several health benefits, including better mobility, enhanced coordination, muscle strengthening and improved cardiovascular health.

Drumming has also been shown to stimulate brain wave activity and improve neuroplasticity and neural connections. This can slow the rate of cognitive decline.

The classes also allow residents to help form connections with one another.

“Drumming in a group setting creates a shared experience, promoting teamwork and coordination,” said Fitness Manager Tara Beach. “Residents work together to create rhythms, fostering a feeling of unity and inclusion.”
