Four Montgomery County golf courses have found a place on the Top 10 Golf Courses from Arnold Palmer’s Birthplace list, writes Debayan Biswas for MSN.
Merion Golf Club (East) ranks highest in second place. The course features winding fairways, punishing rough, and deep bunkers, which tested the world’s best golfers during the 2013 U.S. Open. The recent restoration by Gil Hanse has enhanced the course’s historic design, and prepared it to host another Open in 2030.
Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown follows in fifth place. The club has recently completed a major restoration project which included the return of the par-5 seventh’s “Great Hazard” thanks in part to its complicated greens. A. W. Tillinghast’s home club now once again plays the way its architect envisioned it.
Gulph Mills Golf Club in King of Prussia ranked ninth. Rich in history but not as well-known as its counterparts, the course features a strategic layout that provides a highly coveted experience.
The list is rounded out by Huntingdon Valley Country Club in Huntingdon Valley. Designed by William Flynn and Howard Toomey, it is one of the most challenging courses in the Keystone State.
