Harcum College hosted its 25th Annual Kevin D. Marlo Golf and Racquet Classic on Monday, Jun. 2, at the Llanerch Country Club.
This signature fundraising event brings together alumni, trustees, friends, and community members for a fun and engaging day of golf, tennis, pickleball, and celebration in support of student scholarships.
The 2025 Classic marked a major milestone in the event’s history. Since its founding, the tournament has raised over $1 million and awarded scholarships to 109 Harcum College students with strong academic potential and demonstrated financial need. The scholarship honors Kevin D. Marlo, the son of Trustee Dennis Marlo and brother of Alumni Board Member Christine Marlo-Triemstra ’00, who tragically lost his life in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center.
In honor of the 25th anniversary, Dennis and Karen Marlo have made a transformational $100,000 gift to the Kevin D. Marlo Scholarship Fund, setting a powerful tone of generosity and remembrance for this year’s event.
Several past and present awardees were in attendance for the dinner program. Destiny Fowler, a first-generation college student, 2025 graduate of the Allied Health Science program, and Queens, N.Y. native, spoke about the impact of this scholarship and the story behind it — Kevin Marlo’s tragic death on 9/11.
Fowler said, “I carry with me the responsibility to honor Kevin’s name and legacy, not just by succeeding academically, but by giving back every chance I get — striving to make a difference in the lives of others, just like this scholarship did for me.”
Past Awardee Hannah Nordberg, a 2015 Veterinary Nursing graduate and current ICU veterinary nurse, stressed the importance of receiving this particular scholarship and the timing of it.
Norberg said, “It really was the difference between temporarily suspending my studies and graduating. Receiving this scholarship allowed me to enroll for that semester. For me, it was a fairy tale moment. This scholarship helped me and inspired me to be what I wanted to be.”
The Harcum College community is proud to celebrate this special anniversary and continue the important work of supporting students through the power of scholarships. Harcum College President Jon Jay DeTemple underscored the need for scholarships like this, emphasizing, “Just about everybody that comes to Harcum College needs help. And we don’t let people walk away—we find ways to help because we care about each and every student.”
Those unable to attend the event or who want to support Harcum’s students are encouraged to make a gift. Every donation contributes to Harcum College’s mission to provide life-changing educational opportunities to deserving students.
