This Philadelphia Woman is Committed to Feeding Individuals, Families in Kensington

With it being one of the most challenging neighborhoods in Philadelphia, one Kensington woman is looking past the stigma and seeing the community’s people, reports Wakisha Bailey for CBS News Philadelphia.

Margaux Murphy does so by feeding them through her Greater Goods grocery store, which she opened in 2022.

Her customers range from those living on the streets or dealing with addiction, to families just trying to get by.

“I can’t walk around here and not do something,” Murphy said. “I am this close to being in this situation. I live paycheck to paycheck.”

Nichole Cook, who was a veterinary technician before becoming addicted to heroin, was homeless for 10 years and credits the store for helping her get her life back together.

One of the store’s first customers, Cook is now sober and employed.

Murphy serves up to 150 families Monday through Friday at Greater Goods. Her goal, however, is to get to a point where they’re not relying on the store each week.

“I hope that we are run out of business someday,” said Murphy. “That we are no longer needed.”

Beyond that, she hopes that the love that’s inside her store will be spread throughout the streets of Kensington, helping get rid of the stigma.
