Guru's Indian Cuisine owners Ashni 'Baba' Kumar (center front) and Priya Guru (left, behind) now an all-vegetarian menu.

A pop up at Guru’s Indian Cuisine in Newtown will feature a vegetarian menu, writes Marilyn Johnson for Philly Grub.

Owners Ashni “Baba” Kumar and Priya Guru decided to open the limited engagement vegetarian pop up at the restaurant location..

The bar and 50-seat outdoor patio will be open to diners who order takeout, but the dining room will be closed.

The restaurant has been closed since January, when the couple journeyed to India to focus on  the adoption of two younger sisters.

While the adoption will take several more months, Baba and Priya have returned home with the idea of starting limited operations at the restaurant.

It will feature a take-out vegetarian/vegan menu that is identical to what was offered at the restaurant, minus the meat and fish dishes.

“Spending time in India solidified my views on the ethical treatment of animals and why I cannot handle, serve or consume meat anymore,” explained Priya. “I am convinced there is no way to raise animals for food without causing them immense suffering.”

A portion of profits will go to Guru’s Guardian Angels, a nonprofit launched by the couple in September dedicated to rescuing and sheltering stray animals.
