"Goldenberg's Peanut Chews" has been an iconic candy brand in Philadelphia for more than 100 years.

In 1917, the first Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews were made in Philadelphia and it hasn’t stopped since, writes 6abc.

Today, they are a beloved treat for many.

However, it started as a war ration for military troops during World War I, due to its high protein ingredients.

“It’s the original energy bar,” said Deb Turoczy, senior consumer engagement manager at Just Born Quality Confections.

The candy bar consists of peanuts and molasses covered in a chocolatey coating. Its three major ingredients are molasses, corn syrup, and sugar.

According to Turoczy, 1.2 million bite-sized Peanut Chews are produced daily, using 20 bags and 40,000 pounds of roasted peanuts each week.

The chocolate candy bar consists of three major ingredients: molasses, corn syrup, and sugar.

“Peanut Chews are so popular because of its iconic and beloved taste and texture,” Turoczy added.

There are two flavors — Original Dark and Milk Chocolatey — and it’s available in bars and bite-size form.

In 2003, the Goldenberg family sold the business to Just Born Quality Confections, which has ensured that Peanut Chews continue to be an iconic staple in “The City of Brotherly Love.”
