Operation Gratitude connects servicepeople, veterans, and first responders with donated Halloween candy as a thank-you for their efforts.

The Halloween Candy Give Back (HCGB) is a seasonal outreach by Operation Gratitude, a Chatsworth, CA, nonprofit. Its unique approach to post-Halloween candy temptation may be useful to some Bucks County homes today.

Many of us — whether we spent last night doling out candy or shepherding kids who were collecting it — probably now have a glut of treats around the house.

And it’s a fair bet that by Thursday, you’ll want it gone.

Rather than toss it, Operation Gratitude suggests you donate it.

The organization accepts your annual sugar-laden overage and provides it to servicepeople, veterans, and first responders, thanking them for their present or past service.

The arrangement calls for households to voluntarily ship their Halloween booty to Operation Gratitude, which then sends it where needed.

In 2020, the program delivered more than 93,000 pounds of candy in care packages. It also raised more than $17,000 in donations to help defray the cost of sending those chocolate bars, candy corn, roll-ups, taffies, and gum.

If you find you simply cannot part with your KitKats or you don’t celebrate Halloween, you may send a financial donation to support the effort.

Candy donors must register before shipping sweets.

Further details on participating in the 2021 Halloween Candy Give Back are on the Operation Gratitude website.
