The museum celebrated five decades of business this weekend.

A popular museum in Bucks County just celebrated 50 years of residents and visitors learning about pottery and tile work. Vittoria Woodill reported on the long-standing museum for CBS News Philadelphia.

The TileWorks of Bucks County, located at Swamp Road in Doylestown, celebrated five decades of business by hosting a Boneyard sale this past weekend, where misfit tiles were sold for 50% off of their normal prices.

A niche art style for a museum, it was founded by Henry Mercer as a passion project. Interested in tile artwork and pottery, he used a part of the property that the famous Mercer Museum stands on to make a pottery-making studio, which is still in use today. Now, visitors can get a glimpse into the vast world of these art forms.

“It was a midlife crisis project for him,” said Katia McGuirk, the executive director of the museum. “He was disgruntled at his job at the museum and he was seeing the disappearing Pennsylvania red pottery around him and it disturbed him.”
