Holy Ghost Preparatory School’s baseball team has made a habit of playing in big games in June. The Firebirds recently returned to the PIAA Class 4A state championship for the second time in three seasons, marking another successful year under coach Greg Olenski, writes Tom Moore for Bucks County Courier Times.
The road back to Penn State started strong. Holy Ghost steamrolled its way through the District One and state playoffs by a combined score of 39-4.
Facing off against Indiana Area Senior High School in the state championship, Holy Ghost came back with a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh but fell short in the end, losing 6-5.
The loss doesn’t change the bigger picture: thanks to Olenski, a 2010 Holy Ghost Prep graduate, this program has become a fixture on the state’s biggest stage.
The Firebirds have gone 11-2 in the postseason over the past three years, with three championship-game appearances in five seasons and two trips to the title game alone.
That success has earned Olenski the Courier Times/Intelligencer Baseball Coach of the Year award.
Reflecting on the team’s success, Olenski said, “The real credit belongs to the players in our program and the assistant coaches around them. Their commitment to each other, their work ethic and their willingness to put the team first have been the driving force behind everything we’ve accomplished.”
Looking to the future, Holy Ghost Prep will join the Philadelphia Catholic League this fall, marking a new chapter for a program that has already proven it can compete with anyone, regardless of league.
