Around four years ago, Holy Ghost Prep senior John Burke founded the Junior Firebirds, a basketball clinic for special needs children.

After a hiatus due to COVID-19, Bobby Williams restarted the program in the 2021-22 school year.

Now, in its third year under Williams, the Junior Firebirds host six weekly, hourlong Sunday clinics at the Holt Center.

The clinics focus on basketball skills like dribbling, shooting, and passing, and scrimmaging, for participants as young as 6 to as old as 43.

Williams, alongside about 25 student volunteers from various sports teams, facilitates an environment where participants can shine on the court.

As Williams prepares to attend Penn State, sophomore Bobby Wimsey is set to take over.

“We gain as much from working with them as they do from us,” said basketball player and regular attendee Zak Sharlin.
