Tucked away in his Riegelsville home studio, your friendly neighborhood comic artist Scott Hanna has produced some of the most iconic superhero comic illustrations, writes Bo Koltnow for WFMZ 69 News.
Hanna works primarily with DC and Marvel and has created over 25,000 pages of unforgettable drawings, a comic book record. His most notable works can be found in The Amazing Spider-Man series.
For over 30 years, his Spider-Man, Batman, and Avengers drawings have stuck with fans, leading to a pretty spectacular career.
“I get to live my dream, you know, this childhood dream that I didn’t think was possible,” Hanna said. “It’s like growing up wanting to be an astronaut, and you get to be an astronaut, you know, it doesn’t happen to very many people.”
His process begins with a pencil sketch before being brought to life with black ink and color to create action-packed panels.
One of Hanna’s most impactful works can be found in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 36, which dealt with the tragic fall of the World Trade Center on 9/11.
“The guys working there started reading the comics, and the counselor said that allowed them to open up and connect,” Hanna said. “That shows the power of what drawing pictures can do. It can connect to people. It can open people up. It can share insights.”
