Coatesville High School senior Ariel Abbott knew firsthand about the trials and uncertainty of teenage years. Having navigated them herself, she set out to help her peers, using an offbeat but effective medium: a comic book. Richard Gaw paged through the details for the Chester County Press.

She created the comic book, born of her experience.

Abbott is the author of Phoebe’s Mental Health Journey, a 32-page comic she created to support mental health awareness for youths and teens.

“I was struggling a lot with depression and anxiety that manifested as social problems in school and were exacerbated by issues that were going on at home,” Abbott said.

Over time, she learned to cope with her mental health, which helped her begin building new friendships. Now, she has channeled her experiences into a story that she believes will help others.

Clearly, her journey has centered and focused her: In addition to her role as a student, she is an ambassador for Troop 468 of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, plays the violin, arranges music, draws, and writes stories.

She hopes to pursue graphic design and illustration in college.
