Philadelphia Vision Center in Germantown Thrives As Sister Stores Close Around It

Philadelphia Vision Center has kept families returning for 40 years with affordable prices, walk-in service, and much more.

While most of its sister stores have closed, Philadelphia Vision Center in Germantown has kept families coming back for 40 years thanks to affordable prices, walk-in service, and a philosophy to always listen to its customers, writes Sarah Huffman for Technical.ly.

The small business, now independent and no longer part of a chain, provides eye exams, makes glasses, and sells contact lenses, services that have remained mostly unchanged since it opened in 1984. Its focus on meeting customer needs has attracted generations of returning families, demonstrating the success of its model.

“We want our customers to feel good when they leave,” said owner Alan Bird, “and we want them to go home and say, ‘Hey, their prices are pretty good. They got pretty decent frames.’”

Along with affordable prices, the store accepts multiple insurance plans and produces glasses quickly. Additional services are provided based on customer requests, including placing lenses into new frames, tightening screws, and repairing glasses, even if they were not originally purchased at Bird’s shop.

As a result, the business has become a beloved fixture in the neighborhood, with customers returning year after year.
