The Delaware River Bridge, a 70-year-old link between Bucks County and New Jersey, has secured $600 million in federal funding for a full replacement, writes Fallon Roth for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
U.S. Sens. John Fetterman and Dave McCormick announced the funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in a news release on Saturday.
The award comes after a joint effort by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, state and federal lawmakers, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, who collaborated to submit the federal grant application.
The award is “one of the most consequential infrastructure commitments in Pennsylvania’s history,” said Fetterman and McCormick.
The bridge is a key component of the broader Pa. Turnpike/I-95 Interchange project, designed to reduce congestion and enhance traffic flow in the Philadelphia region and across the East Coast.
“The Delaware River Bridge is not just a Pennsylvania asset; it is a backbone of our national freight and passenger transportation network,” said the Pennsylvania senators. “This funding will make it safer and more resilient for the commuters, families, and businesses that depend on it every single day.”
