Edgely Bridge in Bristol Expected to Reopen Before This Year’s End

Edgely Bridge in Bristol, closed since 2023, is in the final stages of reconstruction and is expected to reopen this year.

Edgely Bridge in Bristol, which has been closed since February 2023, is in the final stages of reconstruction and is expected to reopen for traffic before the year’s end, writes JD Mullane for the Bucks County Courier Times.

The work on the abutments is projected to be done by the end of October, after which the deck will receive a fresh topcoat of asphalt, and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation staff will perform a final inspection and certify the 106-year-old bridge as safe.

“The goal has always been (completion) at the end of the year and we still look on target for that,” said Bristol Township Manager Randee Mazur.

Locals use the two-lane bridge to cross the Northeast Corridor rail lines, the most heavily traveled in the nation. The bridge was closed after chunks of concrete fell from its underside onto the track, creating a danger to rail traffic.

Repairs were initially expected to be complete by the end of 2024, but steel wires in and near the deck’s floor beams complicated the process.

The project was funded with $2 million in state and federal funding.
