Richboro’s Athletes Helping Athletes Supporting Kids with Special Needs

Richboro’s Athletes Helping Athletes is an organization dedicated to supporting those with special needs through sports and social events.

Since 2002, Richboro-based Athletes Helping Athletes has been supporting young people with special needs, giving them a place to form relationships and build self-confidence, reports Erin Coleman for NBC 10 Philadelphia

The organization was founded by Rick Leonetti, who helped give a young man the chance to act as an honorary captain for Council Rock North’s football team.

From there, the organization grew, now supporting 250 special needs families and hosting 30 events throughout the year that are free to the community. Along with sports-based activities, the organization has also held events like their recent prom, which had 350 attendees.

Athletes Helping Athletes operates with the help of around 1,000 local volunteers.

“We always say, we do this for our special needs families, but we actually think that our volunteers get more out of it than even our families and our special needs athletes. It’s really about creating connections,” said AHA President Shannon Brennan.

On Saturday, April 25, the organization will be hosting its annual Baseball Fun Day at the Miracle League of Northampton’s field. Attendees will be able to enjoy a clinic led by local baseball teams, followed by a big game.

A water ice truck will be available at the field with some sweet treats, and some special guests are anticipated to make an appearance.
