Central Bucks students Marisa Nero and Tyler Lockett were recently named “Student Visionaries of the Year” after raising thousands of dollars for the Philadelphia Chapter of Blood Cancer United, writes Jeff Werner for Patch.
Of the 21 teams competing for the title, Nero, a junior at CB East, and Lockett, a junior at CB South, raised the most money. Their $72,000 made up 14 percent of the $536,000 raised.
Nero and Lockett met through school and bonded over their experiences battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
Nero is a survivor of the disease, having previously undergone treatment, while Lockett is currently receiving treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
While giving their acceptance speech, the two discussed the challenges of fighting blood cancer and shared their plans to enter the healthcare field to help others facing the disease.
“These kids gave up their own time to help other people, to think beyond themselves because they care about other people, and they went through things that they hope that no one else ever has to go through,” said Nero’s dad, Gabriel.
“We are just amazingly proud of Marisa and Tyler for volunteering to do this,” Gabriel said. “And then, among all of these people, to be recognized for all of their hard work and raising all this money in just seven weeks, is pretty amazing.”
