Aldan’s Kevin McGonigle On Detroit Tigers Opening Day Roster

Bonner-Prendergast graduate Kevin McGonigle was on the roster for opening day with the Detroit Tigers.

Bonner-Prendergast graduate Kevin McGonigle has made his major league debut at just 21 years old with the Detroit Tigers, writes Owen Hewitt for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The shortstop from Aldan was on the Tigers’ opening day roster on March 26, the start of a three-game series in San Diego against the Padres.

He was the top prospect in the Tigers’ farm system and the No. 2 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline’s prospect rankings.

Less than three years ago, McGonigle was a senior at Bonner-Prendergast and the Catholic League Player of the Year.

He was selected by the Tigers 37th overall in the 2023 MLB draft after he hit .474 as a Bonner-Prendergast senior.

McGonigle, who hits left-handed and throws right-handed, had three seasons in the minor leagues.

He is now an early-season favorite to win the American League’s Rookie of the Year award.

The Phillies fan models his play after former Phillies second baseman Chase Utley.

“Very balanced, strong, uses the entire field,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said of McGonigle. “He’s got a lot of bat speed, plays hard. There’s nothing really bad about his game at all.”
