Newtown Rotary Club and Local Philanthropist Make Donation to Food Cupboard

Gene Epstein donated $3,500 to the Newtown Rotary Club, matching the club’s fall food drive funds, in support of the Wrightstown Food Cupboard.

Bucks County philanthropist Gene Epstein gifted the Newtown Rotary Club with a check for $3,500 to match the funds raised during the club’s recent food drive, writes Jeff Werner for Patch.

Shoppers donated $500 during the club’s October food drive at McCaffrey’s. The Newtown United Methodist Church also made a $1,200 donation to the club, and online donations hit $3,300.

In total, the Wrightstown Food Cupboard received $6,800 and was presented with a check from the Rotarians.

“Anybody in the community who doesn’t do everything they can to help someone else is missing out on the incredible good feeling you have by knowing that you helped somebody and to pass by and not do it, you’re cheating yourself,” said Epstein. “Do everything you can to help other people. You can’t do too much, plain and simple.”

The cupboard received an outpouring of support from locals, with food donations coming in at an impressive rate.

Mitch McIntire, the operator of the food cupboard, stated that the funds will be used to stock shelves and cover the cost of the Giant and Acme gift cards they’ll hand out to families in need for the holidays.

“It’s heartwarming to experience,” said Rotarian Paul Salvatore. “People want to help. And Gene’s matching financial challenge raises that to the next level and enables the food cupboard to fill in the gaps.”
