Nineteen-year-old politician Juan Tafolla is making history in Kennett Square as the borough’s youngest ever elected council member, writes Virginia Esteban-Somalo for Impacto.
After a long campaign, Tafolla won the Kennett Borough Council election with a record-breaking 1,071 votes. The total marks the highest volume of votes for any candidate in Kennett’s history.
Tafolla’s historic win goes beyond the number of votes. In his win alongside Hilda Matos, the election marks the first time that two Hispanic candidates were elected to office at the same time.
Born in Delaware, Tafolla’s parents are originally from Mexico. The family now lives in Kennett Square, where Tafolla is excited to continue serving the community where he grew up.
He is currently studying political science at West Chester University. He previously served as a junior member of the Kennett Square Town Council from July 2023 to September 2024.
Looking forward to his tenure as a Kennett councilman, Tafolla named affordable housing and emergency services as top priorities.
About his historic win and his upcoming term, he said, “We have a lot to do in Kennett Square…We look forward to completing the task and seeing what the next four years bring for Kennett Square.”
