Nonprofit Publication Delaware Currents to Shut Down Due to Lack of Funding

Meg McGuire, founder of Delaware Currents, spoke about the publication and how it informed locals about the Delaware River and its tributaries.

Delaware Currents, the nonprofit website that provides important news and updates about the Delaware River, will be shutting down due to a loss in funding, reports Preston Ehrler for BRC 13

Meg McGuire, a reporter who served as the managing editor for the Times Herald-Record in Middletown, New York, founded the nonprofit a decade ago.

The site covered news related to the river and its tributaries, including historic, recreational, entertaining, and scientific stories.

Narrowsburg, New York’s Upper Delaware Council recognized McGuire for her journalistic efforts and dedication to promoting the river in 2024.

“The Delaware River has such diverse, multiple stakeholders and issues facing it that it’s really important to have an independent source out there to tell us what the facts are,” said Laurie Ramie, the executive director for the Upper Delaware Council

Sandy Hull, co-founder of No National Park, has been a longtime fan of the publication and is sad to see it go.

“It was smart writing. It was good journalism,” she said. “The stories were great because they reflected what’s going on in all areas of the Delaware, from the upper Delaware area down to the Delaware River Basin.”

The site will continue to upload content throughout the rest of the year and will remain accessible through 2026.
