There’s a need out there for more resources to support college journalists in the Philadelphia region, and one network, created by Haverford College senior Jackson Juzang, hopes to make that happen.
He founded the Philadelphia Student Press Association, which seeks funding for the work of student journalists, writes Susan Snyder for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The nonprofit association has 11 area college newspapers and news sites as its members.
It began when Juzang asked Haverford College associate vice president Chris Mills about more resources, and was asked if there was a network of student journalists in the region that Haverford could join to get that support.
There wasn’t.
“So I decided to create one,” said Juzang, 22, the associate editor of The Clerk, Haverford’s student newspaper.
The Philadelphia Student Press Association represents about 400 student journalists. Its board has student editors from Villanova, Swarthmore, Haverford, Eastern, Temple, Drexel, St. Joseph’s, La Salle, Rowan, Rutgers-Camden, and Bryn Mawr.
A main mission is to seek funding to support student journalists in a time when college budgets are tight, and the news industry is faced with rising printing costs and lower readership.
