Robert Ridge Park in Newtown is getting a new garden with the help of dozens of local volunteers, writes Jeff Werner for Patch.
Around 80 individuals gathered at the park to plant phase one of the new pollinator garden near Dolington Road.
1,200 native flowers were planted in hopes of attracting pollinators like moths, wasps, bees, butterflies, birds, bats and more.
The garden will eventually span two acres and feature pathways and benches for locals to enjoy.
Along with being a beautiful spot for guests to visit, the park will also serve an educational purpose. Plaques with QR codes will be constructed that provide details on the life cycles of plants and insects.
The garden was designed by Brittany O’Donnell Garden Designs, and DKC Landscaping is assisting with watering the garden.
“You’re not going to see a lot of color now, but by next summer this will be in full bloom. It’s going to look like a rainbow,” said Newtown Township Supervisor Elen Snyder. “A lot will be small plantings that will come to life in the spring when it will become a place of beauty.”
The hope is that this garden will be the first of many in the township and inspire other communities to build their own.
