Newtown is Encouraging Locals to Grow Native Plants in Their Yards

The Newtown Borough Environmental Advisory Council is encouraging residents to explore a new conservation effort from Homegrown National Park.

The Newtown Borough Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) is promoting new conservation efforts by the Homegrown National Park initiative, writes Jeff Werner for the Patch

The initiative encourages residents to plant native species wherever they can on their property. Locals can create native gardens, convert unused land into meadows, or even just plant a single tree in their backyard.

Native plants are already adapted to the local environment and help maintain a balanced ecosystem. They also improve soil health and don’t require the fertilizers that non-native species often need.

These plants are also low maintenance as they’re able to resist bugs and don’t require a great deal of water.

Native plants also bring vibrant colors to a property, with flowers of various shapes and textures. Blue False Indigo, Foam Flower and Wild Blue Phlox are popular native plants that produce stunning blooms.

Beyond their beauty, these native plants also hold cultural significance, as they were commonly used by Indigenous people.

A full list of native plants can be found on Homegrown National Park’s website.
