Plumstead Community Rallies to Protect Township from Food Waste Recycling Company

The Plumstead community is working with the nonprofit Friends Against Bright Feeds to protect the township from a recycling company.

Friends Against Bright Feeds is a recently formed nonprofit organization co-founded by Andrew Marcum and Bob Mergner.

According to the organization’s website, Bright Feeds is a waste recycler company based in New England that converts food waste from humans into animal feed supplements. The new location would process around 400 tons of waste daily, brought into the township from out of state.

Marcum and Mergner connected online and quickly got to work forming their organization.

“Within 24 hours, we submitted paperwork to the state of Pennsylvania to establish the nonprofit, set up a Facebook group page and a GoFundMe to get organized,” said Marcum

The main concern of residents is how this facility will impact the environment and wildlife in the area.

“The project design is new and has never been field-tested anywhere. So, in a few words, the project is a lot like an untried laboratory experiment that could have severe consequences. If I had to summarize it, it’s this: we have not begun to fight,” said Gene McColligan, one of the nonprofit committee members.
