Levittown’s First Black Family Recognized with Historic Highway Marker

A highway marker will be placed near Dogwood Hollow to memorialize Levittown’s first Black family and the hardship they endured.

Last week, the Pennsylvania State Historical and Museum Commission approved a special highway marker in honor of Levittown’s first Black family, the Myers, who faced intense discrimination, writes JD Mullane for the Bucks County Courier Times.

In 1954, Bill and Daisy Myers moved to Bristol Township’s Bloomsdale-Fleetwing neighborhood. They were active members in the community and the Township’s Democratic Party.

Looking for a bigger space for their three children to grow up in, the family moved to Levittown in 1957 to a home in Dogwood Hollow.

Mobs arrived at the property, throwing rocks through their windows, burning crosses and sending death threats. The family lived in fear for weeks until the court ordered an end to the unrest.

The Myers moved to York in 1961, but years later, Daisy was invited back to Levittown by Mayor Sam Fenton. He offered her and her family a public apology on Dec. 7, 1999.

“It’s important that this event not be erased from history, or forgotten,” said Lynda Myers, Bill and Daisy Myers’s daughter.

The new marker will share the story of “Our Rosa Parks Moment,” detailing the Myers experience and the courage they showed.

In spring 2026, the sign will be placed at Haines Road and Mill Creek Parkway near Dogwood Hollow
