Dr. George Moffitt Jr., a graduate of The Hill School who treated thousands of Pennsylvanians for heart ailments throughout his half-a-century-long career, has passed away at the age of 99, writes Zahriah Balentine for PennLive.
Among the patients he treated were many Marines, as he served during the Korean War as a battalion surgeon. He took part in the 17-day long Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, which took place in late November through mid-December in 1950.
For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star V device, Presidential Unit Citation, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Korea Theater Medal with one battle star.
He settled outside Carlisle where he was appointed to the staffs of Carlisle Hospital, Polyclinic Hospital, Holy Spirit Hospital, and Harrisburg Hospital. He served as chief of cardiology and president of the medical staff. Additionally, he was a clinical professor of medicine at Penn State University College of Medicine.
After retiring, Moffitt volunteered at the Hamilton Health Center as a cardiology consultant.
He had three sons with his wife, Ann, and a daughter from a former marriage to Sigrid Richter.
