The Oscar Hammerstein Museum in Doylestown will be hosting musical events on July 12 and 13 during their scheduled tours in celebration of the famous lyricist’s 130th birthday, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6abc.
Oscar Hammerstein II moved to Doylestown in 1940, where he created some of the most iconic and influential musical works. Music from ‘The Sound of Music,’ ‘Oklahoma!,’ ‘Carousel,’ and ‘South Pacific’ was written in Hammerstein’s Pennsylvania home.
Upon Hammerstein’s passing, the property, known as Highland Farm, was sold and converted to a bed and breakfast.
It was subsequently purchased by the Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theatre Education Center, a nonprofit organization.
Visitors can take tours of the museum on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Sing-along events and similar activities are also frequently held at the museum.
“When he wrote ‘Bless My Homeland Forever,’ I took that as my marching orders to take care of this place,” said William Hammerstein, one of the lyricist’s grandchildren. “There’s so much inspiration to be derived from here. There’s so much joy.”
Award-winning playwright, lyricist and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda made a significant donation to the museum through his foundation, allowing the property to be restored.
