Philadelphia now ranks among the top 15 startup ecosystems in the world, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The city jumped up 12 spots from last year’s rankings of the top 40 regions for startups, which was analyzed and compiled by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network.
Philadelphia is now ranked at number 13 overall.
Its 12-spot jump was the largest of any region included in the study from last year to this year.
“The rest of the world is beginning to recognize what we already know — Philadelphia has the formula for engineering startup success,” said Tiffany Wilson, CEO of the University City Science Center. “We’re seeing more big bets being made from investors and companies based outside of the region because of the assets we offer.”
She added that these assets include research talent, top-tier academic and medical institutions, and grittiness from entrepreneurs who produce results.
Meanwhile, the report highlighted Philly for its strengths in life sciences, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing.
To this end, the Philly region’s startups managed to secure $3.3 billion investments among 444 deals last year. This marks a 37.5 percent increase from 2023.
