Mayor Cherelle Parker was recently joined by Amazon executives and representatives from ACANA, to tour the new Amazon facility in Southwest Philadelphia, writes Sherry Stone for The Philadelphia Tribune.
The massive 140,000-square-foot warehouse handles between 20,000 and 25,000 packages daily throughout Philadelphia, Montgomery County, and Delaware County. The site has also added several hundred jobs to the region.
“The good people who live in this community are trying to make ends meet,” Mayor Parker said. “And so, Amazon comes in and they are what we refer to as an anchor. Whenever we’re working on a commercial corridor, we always try to find the big fish who’s going to be the anchor.”
The Southwest Philadelphia Amazon warehouse in Elmwood has also announced a new contract with the African Cultural Alliance of North America to hire its members to plant trees around the area and help keep the nearby facility grounds neat.
Parker iterated that the Amazon and the ACANA groundskeepers are playing a big part in revitalizing Southwest Philly’s business corridor.
