Mayor Parker Launches New Task Force to Revitalize, Renew Struggling Market East Corridor

Mayor Cherelle has put together a task force comprised of planners, developers, small business owners, community advocates, and more to help revitalize Market East.

Mayor Cherelle Parker and her administration have announced the formation of the Market East Advisory Group, tasked with renewing Market East, write Joe Brandt and Natasha Brown for CBS News Philadelphia.

The new task force is a partnership between Comcast, the Philadelphia 76ers, the Fashion District’s owner Macerich, Brandywine Realty Trust, Thomas Jefferson University, Visit Philadelphia, and a collection of many other city departments, community development groups, and local developers.

Earlier this year, the Sixers and Comcast acquired two blocks of land along the 900 and 1000 Market Street corridor and have plans to demolish the existing buildings there. However, it remains unclear what plans are for the space beyond the demolition.

Jerry Sweeney, CEO of Brandywine Realty Trust who is leading the Market East Advisory Group, said the group with address many of the concerns regarding the corridor.

“We can make the Market East of tomorrow so much better than the Market Street of today,” Sweeney said. “I have no doubt that we can restore Market Street east to its rightful place as an economic engine, a neighborhood connection, once again a place to create amazing memories.”

The City will be requesting ideas from the public, which can be submitted here.
