Ben Luber, former head boys’ basketball coach at George School in Newtown, recently brought his eye for under-the-radar talent to the University of Pennsylvania, writes Isabella DiAmore for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Penn named the Bucks County native an assistant coach in April. His talent for finding hidden gems among players is undeniable.
He was the first to offer NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a college scholarship and recruited him for three years. At the time, nobody knew his name.
As he watched the guard rise to stardom, Luber concluded he’s the same player he first spotted, just progressively better.
That quality is exactly what Luber is looking for in current recruits. He hopes to bring this to the Quakers program, led by new head coach Fran McCaffery.
“It’s pretty neat to see where he’s at this point now, because he was an under-recruited player out of high school,” said Luber. “We want students of the game – someone like Shai is what we’re looking for. It sounds crazy, but there are a lot of kids out there who are under the radar and aren’t being recruited at the highest level.”
