Bensalem Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo hopes to see Neshaminy Mall, long past its heyday, undergo redevelopment to reverse slow sales and reduced traffic, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.
The once-popular shopping destination lost a sizable portion of its customers when two of its anchor stores closed: Macy’s in 2017 and Sears in 2018. The mall also hosted circuses, ice rinks, and carnivals in its prime, none of which visit anymore.
“The Neshaminy Mall has to be redone,” said DiGirolamo. “It’s real dead now.”
There is, however, hope for the future of the one-million-square-foot mall, as it was recently acquired by Paramount Realty, owner of several other malls, including the nearby Woodhaven Mall.
The property represents an excellent opportunity for redevelopment for the new owner, with a high-performing Boscov and a 24-screen AMC Theatre among the tenants.
DiGirolamo, who has seen other malls in the area add touches such as apartments and restaurants to help boost revenue, hopes to see something similar with Neshaminy Mall.
“The mall needs the right kind of businesses,” he said. “We need some kind of housing. But most importantly, the 100 acres need to be developed in the right way. The whole corridor and Street Road is too important.”
