EQT Corp. Powering Up for Growing AI Footprint in Pennsylvania

EQT Corporation, the nation's largest independent natural gas producer, is working on meeting a big demand for AI power generation.

EQT Corp., the nation’s largest independent natural gas producer, is preparing to meet the surging demand driven by Pennsylvania’s growing AI footprint, writes Salena Zito for The Washington Post.

“I mean, the size of this thing, it’s crazy,” said Toby Rice, the CEO of Pittsburgh-based EQT. “We are hearing estimates for power demand for AI that’s anywhere [from] 50 to 75 gigawatts of power, which is the equivalent of the power needed to power 10 to 15 New York cities.”

One of the AI data centers that have been popping up around the country is in Carnegie, next to what used to be Pennsylvania’s largest coal-fired power plant, the Homer City Generating Station.

The facility is being transformed to power gas that would supply the data center. EQT is one of several natural gas providers who are bidding for the project.

Overall, Western Pennsylvania is well-positioned to play a key role in the rise of AI nationwide.

The region’s mix of energy, grit, and expertise helped power the Industrial Revolution, and by leveraging that same legacy, it now appears to be poised to repeat history with AI.
