Delaware Valley University alum Jackie Hartzell, one of the Philadelphia region’s top women’s college basketball coaches, is getting her shot at a Division I program, writes Matt Leon for KYW Newsradio.

During her time at Division II University of the Sciences, Hartzell steered the Devils to five NCAA Tournament spots in eight seasons, boasting an impressive 185-57 record.

When the school merged with Saint Joseph’s and ended its athletics program, she moved to Division III Arcadia University in Glenside, where her team achieved a 54-26 record over three seasons.

Now, she will take over the women’s basketball program at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

“I’m really not sure if it’s fully hit me yet,” she said. “I’m really excited. It’s a little overwhelming right now, but in a positive way. It’s all good things. It’s definitely one of the most humbling experiences of my life.”

Hartzell has always thought about coaching a Division I team, but only if the timing was right.

After the interview and getting the chance to meet some of the administration, she felt both the timing and the fit was just right.
