Meat Returns to Guru’s Indian Cuisine Menu, Pleasing Former Customers
After a switch to a meat-free menu that caused a customer rebellion, Guru’s Indian Cuisine in Newtown has a new owner who has decided to bring back non-vegetarian dishes, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
As a vegetarian herself, Priya Guru, the restaurant’s original owner, had grown increasingly concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability, as well as ethical sourcing. When she felt she had no choice, she decided to take meat and seafood off the menu at the nine-year-old eatery.
Customers pushed back, and revenue at Guru’s Indian Cuisine dropped 85 percent from April to July.
Guru wanted to close the restaurant, but her nephew, Samarth Joshi, decided to take over.
“I told her, ‘Let me just step in so you can keep your ethics,” said Joshi, who is an omnivore.
He reintroduced meat to the menu and the business has already started recovering.
He also agreed to donate a portion of profits to Guru’s Guardian Angels, started by Guru and her partner, chef Ashni “Baba” Kumar. The nonprofit is dedicated to rescuing and sheltering stray animals worldwide.
