Guru’s Indian Cuisine in Newtown Township, which recently became a vegetarian establishment, is officially under new ownership, writes Jeff Werner for the Patch.
Chef Ashni “Baba” Kumar and Priya Guru have decided to sell the business to Samarth Joshi, Priya’s 28-year-old nephew, who plans on putting meat options back on the menu.
“As many of you know, we recently transitioned to a fully vegetarian menu out of our deep concern for animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and ethical sourcing,” said Priya.
“However, this change has significantly impacted our business, leading to a substantial drop in revenue.”
The couple made the difficult decision to sell Guru’s to Samarth, who “has decided to reintroduce meat to ensure the survival of the restaurant,” added Priya.
The restaurant has undergone a lot of changes this year, including closing in January and reopening in April as a vegetarian pop-up, with all proceeds benefiting Priya’s animal welfare charity.
Now that the restaurant has a new owner, more changes are afoot.
“I plan on developing the bar program and introducing a Bollywood-themed happy hour as well as hosting a complimentary ‘Meet the New Guy’ happy hour Thursday, August 22 from 5 to 7 PM,” said Joshi.
