Kayden’s Law Approved to Enhance Child Custody Safety in Pennsylvania
Kayden’s Law, a bill named in remembrance of a Lower Makefield girl who tragically lost her life in 2018, has been approved by Pennsylvania’s state House of Representatives, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.
The bill aims to take more action in protecting children in custody cases. The bill’s next stop is Governor Josh Shapiro’s desk to be officially signed into law.
The legislation is named after Kayden Mancuso, a seven-year-old who was tragically killed by her father during a court-ordered unsupervised visit.
It aims to:
- Strengthen current factors judge must consider in making custody and visitation decisions
- Ensure that any custody order includes necessary safety conditions and restrictions
- Encourages the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to implement training programs for judges and other court staff on child abuse
Kayden’s mother, Kathy Sherlock fought and advocated over the past several years for this legislation.
“This bill cannot heal the grievous wound that Kathy and her family have suffered, but by protecting our children moving forward, I hope it will give them some measure of solace,” said Pennsylvania State Senator Steve Santarsiero.
