Warrington native and Lafayette Leopards Linebacker Billy Shaeffer is one of the three finalists for the 2023 Buck Buchanan Award.

The Buchanan Award will be presented on January 6 at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Banquet in Frisco, Texas. The recognition honors the national defensive player of the year in Division I FCS college football.

Shaeffer, who has been drawing national praise throughout the year, led Lafayette and the Patriot League with 10 sacks. He finished with 0.83 per game and ended the season tied for 10th in the country.

He achieved the most sacks for a Leopard in 23 years as well as the second-most ever in a season at Lafayette.

The International Affairs major also recorded 21.5 tackles for loss, which managed to put him in first place in the Patriot League and fourth in the nation.

Shaeffer, who is the All-Patriot League First-Team selection, was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week twice during the 2023 Patriot League championship season.
