Mon Dieu! Was Wawa Really Looking for a Sommelier for its King of Prussia Store?

"Hmm... Now what pairs well with a Shorti?"

Wawa careers have been predictable for decades: manager, register help, food preparer, clean-up crew. But a recent job posting to Seasoned, a hospitality-industry job app, looked like the area’s go-to quick-stop brand was taking its menus in a different direction. Hanna Albertine served the story for Philadelphia Magazine.

A recent tweet indicated that Wawa was providing a first time-ever career opportunity for a sommelier — a wine steward — in King of Prussia.

The job duties were quite specific: “As a sommelier, you’ll be responsible for the overall direction of the wine program. You should be personable and able to communicate with guests with varying levels of wine knowledge. You view finding the perfect wine as a challenge, and factor in budget, flavor profiles and guest preference to make recommendations that provide a next level experience.”

No mention was made, however, of the challenges of providing this white-glove service at a convenience store. The KoP Wawa offers neither tableside service nor tables.

Wawa officially debunked the listing and pointed job hunters to its legit openings at Wawa.com.

And new Wawa hires looking for an onsite toast with which to mark the achievement will have to settle for a panini.

More on this Wawa faux career posting on the Seasoned app is at Philadelphia Magazine.
