A handcrafted table by influential Malvern artist Wharton Esherick is expected to get as much as $70,000 in an online auction that started over the weekend, writes Noah Zucker for the PhillyVoice.

The wagon wheel table was named after the distinct design of its legs which look like a pair of wagon wheels cut into several pieces. The rosewood, ash, and birch materials provide the table with warm tones, making it feel like it belongs in the pioneer era.

Esherick was leading the studio craft movement during the first half of last century, when most furniture was being made in high-volume factory environments. He and his counterparts crafted one-of-a-kind pieces by hand that were functional but also very expensive.

The wagon wheel table was most likely built in Esherick’s Malvern studio, which currently serves as a museum. The artist moved to the property in 1913 and remained there until his death in 1970.

The auction is currently ongoing. Bids can be placed until May 24 at 7 p.m. The table is estimated to fetch anywhere between $50,000 and $70,000.
