High School Girl Scout Juliana V. Marino was honored for her organizational effort to create these wreaths for local hospice residents.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania has honored local high school student Juliana V. Marino for her work at Chandler Hall, a Newtown senior residence. She received the organization’s Gold Award in recognition of a project she oversaw to lift the spirits of hospice care residents.

Marino devised her project with input from her mother, a Chandler Hall certified registered nurse practitioner, and input from the internal hospice team.

She gathered a corps of volunteers to fashion 55 wreaths with interchangeable décor for seasons and holidays. They were hung on resident doors to not only provide some cheer but also to perhaps spark fond memories of times past.

“We called them RELIC wreaths, to stand for ‘Rings of Everlasting Life that Inspire Personal Comfort,’” said Marino. “This stemmed from the Quaker values that Chandler Hall is built upon.”

“My goal was to bring comfort and joy,” she continued. “Watching the smiles on their faces when they saw the wreaths made the whole experience so rewarding.”

The Gold Award is the organization’s highest honor. It is given to scouts whose leadership of volunteers works to charitably address a community problem, as Marino did.

The award is given to only 5.4 percent of eligible Girl Scout members.
