Pine Run Retirement Community housekeeping associate Wilfredo “Willie” Macatantan was named Staff Member of the Year by LeadingAge PA, a nationwide nonprofit devoted to aging advocacy.

The organization recognized Macatantan for his work excellence during COVID-19. More than his assigned duties, the honor cited his above-and-beyond actions.

When the pandemic hit, Pine Run shift coverage became a challenge, as it did at senior homes nationwide. Macatantan volunteered to serve in the skilled nursing COVID unit, taking on added tasks, at great personal risk, and doing so with a smile.

He also connected personally with those he served.

When he noticed one resident refusing food, Macatantan sat with him and encouraged him to eat. On other occasions, Macatantan washed, dried and folded personal laundry for residents. He even covered New Year’s Eve — one of his scheduled days off — for an ailing colleague.

“Willie is a kind and caring person in an industry that has seen more than its share of stress this past year,” said Chris Garges, Pine Run Senior Director of Environmental Services. “He is a welcoming personality and a hard worker.

Macatantan received his award June 16 at LeadingAge’s virtual annual conference.
