Hundreds of Bucks County workers are watching closely as a beloved healthcare institution may soon be under new ownership, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.
Chandler Hall Health Services, a Quaker-based continuing care retirement community in Newtown, is moving to sell its business operations, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
The filing provided a targeted sale date of Aug. 1. However, that date hinges on regulatory hurdles, including approval from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, which must sign off on any nonprofit healthcare transaction.
The filing did not identify the buyer.
The transaction could displace up to 220 employees. Affected roles span the full breadth of the organization, from certified nursing assistants and registered nurses to culinary servers, medication technicians, and senior leadership.
Founded in 1973, Chandler Hall has operated for more than five decades, offering independent living, memory care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and hospice services. It has long been woven into the fabric of Newtown’s healthcare and senior living landscapes.
The timing of the upcoming sale follows years of financial strain.
The organization closed its inpatient hospice center in 2023 amid financial difficulties, a closure that preceded a $1.27 million net loss in its most recent 2024 financial disclosure.
